A letter from the Director of Services

When a child runs away from home it is a very serious problem ... whether they have packed a bag
after a disagreement with their parents or they are just not coming home when they are supposed to.
What it signifies is that their positive decision making tools are impaired.
It also means they are more vulnerable to bad decisions and possibly unsafe environments or situations.
Both circumstances can result in tragedies.

As a parent in the middle of the turmoil of a teenager running away there are some
important facts you should know

A. The Police will only vigorously search for your child if your child has committed a crime
and they are quick to tell you "running away from home is not a crime."
If the Police happen to come across your child they will simply bring him/her home
and typically the child will run away again only this time they will make themselves more difficult to find.

B. If you hire a Private Investigator they are not allowed to apprehend your child and bring them home
...a P. I. can certainly find your child but once they do either you or the Police will have to
extract your child from wherever they are.
Your child will probably get away from you again and it's a 50-50 proposition that the Police will respond
in time after your child has disappeared.
If you should choose to work with our organization, we utilize proven first hand methods that work.
Over the past 18 years we have located 1543 children of the 1547 we have been hired
to locate/intervene and/or transport. We found them all within 7 days and 90% of them within 3-4 days.

UNLIKE ANYBODY ELSE ONCE WE LOCATE A CHILD WE CAN TAKE A CHILD INTO OUR CARE AND CUSTODY
AND SWIFTLY AND SMOOTHLY BEGIN THE NECESSARY TRANSPORT TO YOUR CHOSEN DESTINATION.
WE ARE MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL RUNAWAY TASK FORCE AND HAVE STRONG
RELATIONSHIPS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT, TYPICALLY WE UTILIZE THE SERVICES OF
OFF DUTY LAW ENFORCEMENT OR BOUNTY HUNTERS TO HEAD UP OUR TEEN LOCATOR TEAMS.
WE RECOMMEND THAT BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING TO AT LEAST SPEAK TO US FIRST,
BECAUSE ONE FALSE MOVE COULD MAKE THE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR CHILD'S ULTIMATE
WELL BEING. PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR CHILD IS NOT THINKING RATIONALLY...SO YOU MUST.

Sincerely, Evan Malmuth
Director of Services

RUNAWAY RECOVERY

Teen Intervention Service understands the extreme sensitivity involved in locating a missing child.

This is an operation of patience and persistence.

To become overzealous in such a sensitive matter can cause significant problems.

For example, when locating a runaway, asking the wrong person the wrong question can tip off the

child causing him/her to go further into hiding.

One must not forget you are dealing with a child who is reluctant to return.

By compiling all available information first, setting forth a strategy, and then proceeding with extreme

caution, we have been able to provide the highest level of service with unsurpassed results.

• Contact your local police department (Missing Persons department when applicable) and

have your child filed as a “runaway” and listed with NCIC (National Crime Investigation Center).

Be sure the runaway alert directs the child to be taken into custody.
• Keep a journal of everyone you talk with. Include name, time, date, department, and comments.

Use this journal for all personal and professional contacts made.
• Locate most recent photos of your child. Try to find pictures with front and side profiles.
• Make a detailed inventory of what you believe your child may have on his/her person

including: type of clothing, money, credit cards, cell phone, back pack, sleeping bag…
• Check your telephone caller I.D. and log all incoming numbers stored in it.
• If your child has a phone in his/her room press redial and make a note of the number.
• Contact your local telephone company. Make sure you have the most sophisticated version of

caller I.D. added to any telephone number you own.
• Purchase the latest caller I.D.
• Do not alert others that you are securing outside help to locate your child.
• Be careful of divulging your intentions of seeking and/or securing investigators help to siblings.

They most often mean well, but can alert your missing child if contact is made.
• Contact friends and family your child may call and let them know your child is missing.

Have them relay a simple message if your child contacts them.

The message should express love and concern, but not threats or punishment.

Ask them to please notify you if he/she calls to let you know they are safe.

Be careful about pressing them for more information as they may side with your child

and inform them that you are acting suspicious.
• Secure an 800 number for your residence. Give this number to everyone you think your child may contact.

Tell them it is so your child can call home anytime from anywhere.

Stress, again, your utmost concern is for your child’s welfare.
• If your child makes contact with you reassure them. Be careful about saying you are not upset or

angry with their circumstance. Many runaways will find that suspicious.

Stress that you are very concerned for their safety. Do not overly press for information.

This too can make you look suspect.
• Keep all contact information and the journal with you at all times. You never know when you may need it.

• Prepare an intervention plan in advance.
Do not wait until your child is found or returns home.

WE LOVE TO CALL WITH GOOD NEWS!
